Nd:LuLF, that is, Nd:LuLiF4, was grown with a Czochralski technique an
d characterized spectroscopically to include absorption and emission d
ata and lifetime. Evaluation of this laser material for operation on t
he F-4(3/2) -->I-4(11/2) and the F-4(3/2)-->I-4(13/2) transitions was
performed. Normal-mode laser performance was achieved on both the pi a
nd the sigma polarizations for both transitions by use of a simple pol
arization-selective resonator. Both normal-mode and Q-switched perform
ance was characterized on the F-4(3/2) --> I-4(11/2) transition. (C) 1
