As the first step in the development of a liquid chromatographic/tande
m mass spectrometric method for the quantitation of cocaine, its metab
olites and its pyrolytic degradation products from biological matrices
, the collision-induced dissociation of the protonated and selected de
uterium-labeled species was studied. The fragment ions generated from
the CID mass spectra were assigned and fragmentation mechanisms were p
