Ys. Dolotov, ON SOME PROBLEMS OF NATURAL REGIME REGULATION AND PROTECTION OF THE WORLD OCEANS SAND COASTAL AREAS, Okeanologia (Moskva), 38(4), 1998, pp. 622-628
An analysis of current problems concerning natural regime regulation o
f low-lying sand coasts (protection from erosion) was carried out on t
he basis of native and foreign experience. Evaluation of efficiency of
different coastal means of protection was made. It was emphasized tha
t the following is necessary: long term repeated observations over nat
ural processes and the state of natural environment in coastal areas o
ver a long extent, application of determined natural regularities for
selection of necessary coastal protective measures; priority use of na
tural materials; artificial beaches creation and additional sediment n
ourishment of existing natural ones together with building of groins (
only under specific conditions) and with possible use of different pro
tective covers of shore slopes, utilization of coastline protective fu
nctioning of coastal dunes; modelling of natural processes and protect
ive measures; working out of an national strategy for low-lying coasta
l territories protection under conditions of expected increased sea-le
vel rise.
