Several laser techniques and molecular beam mass spectrometry have bee
n combined in a study oi fuel-rich flames in order to characterize the
reactive atmospheres which may lead to soot and soot precursor format
ion and to the deposition of diamond films. The potential of Raman dia
gnostics for temperature and concentration measurements in sooting fla
mes is demonstrated. Also, the results hint at the importance of fuel-
specific pathways to benzene formation. Atomic and molecular species o
f influence on diamond deposition have been detected; films of good qu
ality may be the result of a balance between OH radicals and hydrocarb
on species.
