S. Holness et J. Boelhouwers, SOME OBSERVATIONS ON HOLOCENE CHANGES IN PERIGLACIAL ACTIVITY AT LONGRIDGE, MARION-ISLAND, South African journal of science, 94(8), 1998, pp. 399-403
Extensive evidence of Holocene periglacial activity exists at Long Rid
ge, Marion Island, in the maritime sub-Antarctic. This includes blockf
ields, stone-banked lobes, solifluction terraces, Azorella terraces an
d various forms of patterned ground. This paper examines the spatial d
istribution and variation of relict, as well as present-dnp periglacia
l forms and activity Evidence is presented for considerably colder con
ditions on Marion Island earlier in the Holocene. In addition, evidenc
e is advanced for a ;steeper periglacial gradient than at present.
