Rl. Larson, REPLACEMENT HEIFER DEVELOPMENT - MINERAL AND VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTATION AND USE OF PHARMACOLOGICAL AGENTS, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 20(8), 1998, pp. 174
Ensuring optimum and balanced intake of macrominerals, trace minerals,
and vitamins is important in heifer development programs. Veterinaria
ns consulting in these programs must also advise clients on the proper
use of medications to control coccidiosis and on the use of ionophore
s, anabolic implants, and anthelmintics. Once a program for selection
and nutritional development of replacement heifers is in place, veteri
narians should guide their;clients through estrus synchronization and
artificial insemination to capitalize on the genetic and management ad
vantages of using prevent Superior sires. The third article in this se
ries will review the energy and protein aspects of nutritional develop
ment, followed by the final article, which will examine strategies to
synchronize estrus to maximize the benefits of artificial insemination
.
