Abstract
We use a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to reposition individual C-60 molecules adsorbed on a well-ordered monolayer of 4,4'-dimethylbi anthrone (DMB), first grown on Cu(111). The surface binding energies a nd diffusion barriers of C-60 molecules are substantially modified whe n the molecules bond to DMB instead of to Cu. The tip of the STM can b e used to reposition single, isolated C-60 molecules across the surfac e without disrupting the DMB film underneath.
