Abstract
The possibility of creating new terraces on a metal surface is demonst rated. Using a single crystal of Au(110) as substrate and a scanning t unneling microscope's tip as a tool, we induce adatoms of gold to form new terraces under the tip. The mechanism is directional diffusion in duced by the electrical field gradient. The formed terraces show clear (1 x 2) reconstruction, indicating that the nature of these terraces is unequivocally gold.
