Abstract
We discuss a novel source-theoretical description of the STM based on the concepts of quantum-mechanical scattering theory. As an applicatio n of the formalism, we study how the presence of a crystalline adsorba te layer alters the tunneling current for a simplified one-dimensional surface model.
