Abstract
Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we have studied the nucleat ion and growth process of Pb clusters induced by the atomic hydrogen a dsorption on the Si(111)-root 3 x root 3-Pb (beta), (gamma) surfaces. For both root 3-Pb (beta) and (gamma) surfaces, Pb atoms formed cluste rs whose height is estimated to be about 2-4 atomic layers, consistent with previous ion scattering results. We also discuss the difference of both hydrogen-induced structures in detail.
