Abstract
The surfaces of Tb epitaxial thin films were investigated by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) on the samples deposited by molec ular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) methods. The crystal structures of films were controlled in situ by reflection hig h energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Different magnetization loops w ere observed depending upon the film roughness. Smooth samples show ma gnetic anisotropy with an easy plane, which is not observed in the cas e of rough samples. The interpretation of the magnetic properties of T b epitaxial films given is based on the STM and RHEED measurements.
