Abstract
Nonstarch water-soluble polysaccharides (NWP) were extracted from the seeds of 12 legume species. Complete acid hydrolysis and gas liquid ch romatography were used to determine the composition of monosaccharides in the extracted compounds. Galactomannans (GM), composed mainly of m annose and galactose, were isolated from NWP, and the ratio of constit uent monomers was determined. The role of GM in the physiology of seed germination is discussed.
