Use of cocaine has been reported to increase cigarette smoking, but th
ere are no published studies of cigarette smoking during early cocaine
abstinence. The authors assessed ad libitum cigarette smoking of 12 c
ocaine-dependent smokers housed on a closed research ward. Last cocain
e use averaged 0.6 grams 1.8 days before admission. Smoking was measur
ed indirectly with computerized cigarette dispensers. There was no sig
nificant difference between self-reported daily number of cigarettes s
moked before admission and the number of cigarettes dispensed daily fo
r the first 7 full days after admission. These findings suggest that e
arly cocaine abstinence does not significantly alter cigarette smoking
.
