We demonstrate the hybrid superconducting pixel detector (HSPD) princi
ple using a test configuration. This device consists of a Si detector
bonded by ultra-thin Al wires to a high quality Nb/AlOx/Nb Josephson T
unnel Junction acting as current sensitive discriminator. Experimental
data, obtained with a Ru-106 beta source, clearly show minimum ionisi
ng particle (mip) detection capability. The efficiency of the tested d
evice reaches 90% with signals corresponding to 2 mips and it can be s
ignificantly improved once the complete device is monolithically integ
rated in one circuit. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserv
