Abstract
This paper describes the initial process for a large cable-stayed brid ge across the River Dee in North Wales. It identifies various key fact ors in reaching fundamental decisions affecting the design and looks t o highlight the art of engineering rather than the science. The author 's hope is that readers find it thought provoking rather than providin g a definitive statement.
