1-Benzyl-1-aza-4-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane periodate 1, readily prepa
red as an orange solid from commercially available 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.
2.2]octane, is useful for oxidation in anhydrous conditions. The reage
nt converts alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds, alpha-hy
droxy ketones to diketones, and aromatic amines to azo compounds, in t
he excellent yields. The reagent is ineffective in oxidising double bo
nds, aldehydes and ketones.
