As introduction the history of the capture of alpine ibex is briefly s
ummarized. The capture of 155 alpine ibex during the years 1992 - 1995
provides the basis for the presentation of experience using box traps
and immobilization over distance (Figs. 1, 2). Materials and applied
methods are described in detail. The Hellabrunner Mix (HATLAPA and WIE
SNER 1982) were used for the immobilization as well as Tolazolin as co
unter agent and Doxapram as respiratory stimulant (Tab.1). The applica
tion of cold gas projectors requires short shooting distances of maxim
ally 30 m (Fig. 4), whereby a quiet and open approach towards the targ
et animals is of utmost importance. It is shown that the medication us
ed is reliable. After the application of the Hellabrunner Mix 70% of t
he animals were completely tranquilized within 20 minutes (Figs. 7) Th
e use of Tolazolin and Doxapram is advantageous. Losses due to falls a
nd to problems with the tranquilization remained within the framework
of prior experience. The capture with box traps is somewhat more certa
in, but much more time consuming than immobilization over a distance.
