Abstract
The paper deals with medical, psychological and philosophical perspect ives of pain. The author refers to the relationship of pain and pleasu re, anxiety and pain and to pain as a human protective function. Aspec ts of the 'language' of pain as well as the function of analgesia are mentioned and an archetypal relationship of pain and death is assumed.
