PPAR gamma is a member of the peroxisome proliferator activated recept
ors (PPAR) subfamily of nuclear receptors, So far two PPAR gamma isofo
rms, PPAR gamma 1 and PPAR gamma 2, were known in mammals. We describe
the structure of a novel human PPAR gamma subtype, PPAR gamma 3, The
PPAR gamma 3 mRNA is transcribed from a novel promoter localized 5' of
exon A2, PPAR gamma 3 mRNA expression was restricted to adipose tissu
e and large intestine. Similar to human PPAR gamma 1 and -2, PPAR gamm
a 3 is activated by thiazolidinediones and prostaglandin J derivatives
and binds with high affinity to a PPRE. (C) 1998 Federation of Europe
