The spectral characterization of the oxidized form of(ruthenium(II) ci
s-di(isothiocyanato)bis(4,4'-dicarboxy 2,2'-bipyridyl), (commonly know
n as N3-dye) in aqueous solution is made by reacting the title compoun
d with pulse radiolytically generated radicals N-3(.) and Br-2(-.) The
one-electron oxidized form of Ru(LI)-dye initially formed in both the
se oxidation reactions shows absorption maxima at 320 and 740 nm. Foll
owing radiolysis, the one-electron oxidized form of Ru(II)-dye undergo
es further transformations to yield a stable product that exhibits a c
haracteristic absorption maximum at 440 nm. Our preliminary results pr
ovide the spectral evidence for the formation of two different species
that follow the oxidation of Ru(II)-dye.
