Abstract
Many components of machines and plants are made of cast materials. The ir essential advantages are a layout with a high freedom of design, an d the possibility of individually choosing material properties. The fi nding of optimal layouts of cast components is a MultiDisciplinary Opt imization (MDO-) task, as the manufacturing and operation of thermal r ollers demand the treatment of heat conduction problems, metallurgical aspects, as well as mechanical considerations.
