The parametrization scheme of heat and moisture transfer in the soil-v
egetation system suggested in [1] is used within the atmospheric gener
al circulation model being developed at the Institute of Numerical Mat
hematics, Russian Academy of Sciences. Simulated seasonal variations i
n the surface air temperature and the land hydrologic cycle are compar
ed with those obtained with a simplified treatment of soil processes.
The sensitivity of model circulation to the degree of detail in the sp
ecification of soil and vegetation types is analyzed. Relevant data on
these parameters used in the general circulation model are given. On
the whole, the parametrization proposed is found promising for use in
climate studies.
