The paper describes the implementation of minimal-disease-programs in
different pig breeding units of varying sizes. Programs were directed
at control of infectious respiratory disease, swine dysentery and para
sitoses. Measures consisted of a complex and concomitant combination o
f hygienic procedures, drugs, and vaccinations aimed at reducing infec
tious agents within animals and also in the environment to a point whe
re healthy pig raising is possible under the condition that no antibio
tics or antiparasitic drugs must be used at a later time. The programs
resulted in continously better performance, reduced losses and a mark
edly better meat quality.
