What are some ways to involve young people in the decisions that affec
t their lives at the neighborhood level? This paper distinguishes amon
g five types of involvement-citizen action, youth action, youth develo
pment, neighborhood development, and neighborhood-based youth initiati
ves-and examines some of their promise and practice. It draws upon a n
ational study of exemplary community youth programs and other studies
of organizational resources that contribute to capacity building and r
aise questions about the future of the field.
