Abstract
Calorimetric measurements of the respiratory heat rates of plant tissu es, made simultaneously with measurements of gas exchange rates, allow calculation of plant growth rates. Laboratory measurements of plant m etabolism as a function of environmental variables thus provide a mean s for rapidly identifying cultivars or accessions most suitable for gr owth in different climates and conditions.
