Abstract
Jaundice is a frequent clinical sign among healthy term newborns. A ri gorous clinical assessment is crucial in order to recognise haemolytic , infectious and metabolic diseases. The use of the transcutaneous jau ndice-meter in decision-making, and the phototherapy principles and ap plications, are discussed. Intensive phototherapy allows a rapid decre ase in plasma bilirubin levels, so that it may used to treat even seve re hyperbilirubinemia in the maternity ward. (C) 1998 Elsevier, Paris.
