Efficient electroluminescence from an organic thin film at low drive v
oltage was first reported in 1987. Since then, the possibility of real
izing a new generation of flat panel displays has driven an increasing
volume of research in both industrial and academic laboratories. In e
arly 1997, the improvement in the efficiency and lifetime of organic l
ight-emitting devices leaves them poised to compete commercially as mo
nochrome, emissive flat panels. Advances based on the unique propertie
s of organic thin films create the potential for realizing a new gener
ation of full color and flexible displays.
