Abstract
In this work we give a methodology for controller design and analysis which accounts for design criteria such as: (a) optimal system respons e to external disturbances, (b) robustness to modelling uncertainty, a nd(c) constraints on the controller order. The methodology is applied to a structural control benchmark problem sponsored by the ASCE Commit tee on Structural Control. The structural system considered consists o f a scale model of a three-storey building employing an active mass dr iver to suppress ground motion disturbances. The methodology proved ef fective for obtaining a satisfactory low-order controller for this cla ss of problems. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
