The 5p(5)5d(3) configuration is very complex containing 110 levels and
is quite a bit spread out due to the large magnetic interaction zeta(
p) of the inner p-shell electron. This is the first time that such a c
onfiguration has been studied in 5d-subshell ions. On the basis of the
5d(2)-5p(5)5d(3) transitions in the 140-280 Angstrom region of nine-t
imes ionized gold (AuX) and in the 135-250 Angstrom region of ten time
s ionized mercury (Hg XI), we have established 80% of the levels of th
e 5p(5)5d(3) configuration in each spectrum. We have also established
19 out of 20 levels of the 5d5f configuration in each spectrum, and fo
ur levels of the doubly excited 6s6p configuration of AuX The missing
5d6p P-3(0) in both spectra have been identified Multi-configuration i
nteraction Hartree-Fock calculations and least-squares-fitted parametr
ic calculations were carried out to interpret satisfactorily the resul
ts presented. 248 additional lines of AuX and 260 additional lines of
Hg XI have been classified.
