Abstract
Small specimens are specimens obtained by fine-needle biopsy, core bio psy, or removal of tumors less than 1 cm in diameter. Morphologic and immunohistochemical techniques provide the prognostic information supp lied by hormone receptors, cell growth markers, oncogenes, and tumor s uppressor genes. With fine-needle biopsy specimens; in addition to nuc lear grade, DNA-ploidy, and S phase determinations, the paraffin minib loc method allows to perform the above-mentioned immunohistochemical s tudies. Biochemical methods measure enzymes (protease, thymidine-kinas e, and thymidilate synthetase) of prognostic significance, whereas flo w cytometry evaluates growth; molecular studies are not yet available on a routine basis.
