Because mammography has low specificity, 70% of breast lesions subject
ed to surgical biopsy are benign. Surgical breast biopsy is not withou
t disadvantages. Improvements have been achieved in stereotactic biops
y equipment with the goal of increasing sensitivity. The technical cha
rac teristics of the equipment used at the Rene Huguenin Center are de
scribed in detail. The limitations of stereotactic biopsy are discusse
d, and its indications according to clinical and mammogram findings ar
e reviewed. Although the results obtained at the Rene Huguenin Center
are preliminary, promising improvements in patient comfort and specime
n quality have been noted.
