J. Civatte et J. Bazex, PREVENTION OF THE DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF ULTRAVIOLET-RADIATION, La Semaine des hopitaux de Paris, 74(31-32), 1998, pp. 1213-1220
The sources of light, namely the sun with its natural spectrum and the
artificial sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, are reviewed, as we
ll as the circumstances in which the body is exposed to UV radiation,
primarily of the A type. Targets, namely the skin and eye, the effects
of UV on tissues, and therapeutic uses of UV in dermatology, pediatri
cs, and psychiatry are discussed. The hazards associated with UV expos
ure, including acute and chronic skin reactions and ocular damage, are
described, and attention is drawn to interactions with photosensitizi
ng agents. Means for protecting the skin and eyes are reviewed, genera
l advice is given, and recommendations regarding regulations for sunsc
reen and protective glasses are made. The value of campaigns aimed at
educating the general public is underlined. It is emphatically stated
that exposure to UV for tanning is devoid of health benefits.
