Site selective luminescence spectra of Eu3+ in a lead germanate glass
were measured at 150 K as a function of the excitation wavelength by u
sing laser-induced fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) techniques. The e
nergies of the Stark components of the F-7(1) and F-7(2) states were o
btained by Gaussian fitting of the spectra. Assuming a C-2v site symme
try, a crystal field (CF) analysis was carried out. The behaviour of t
he major CF ratios B-44/B-40 versus - B-22/B-20 seems to agree with th
e trend predicted by the model proposed by Brecher and Riseberg for th
e co-ordination of fuji in oxide glasses. No effect due to the occurre
nce of an incipient amorphous phase separation is observed. (C) 1998 E
