Abstract
For the quantitative description of convection and diffusion in normal and pathological lungs we used a 'christmas tree'-model instead of th e well-known 'trumpet'-model for the shape of the conducting airways a nd the alveolar volume. The numerical solution for Paiva's diffusion e quation [1] has been adapted for changing lung volume and thus for var iable length and variable cross-sectional area of the consecutive gene rations. The results are in good agreement with the results of clinica l measurements.
