Abstract
An attractive force between magnetic poles was utilised to produce sig nificant wavelength shifts in fibre Bragg gratings. Programmable magne ts were used to controllably strain and shift the wavelength of the gr ating by more than 15 nm. The wavelength tuning is fast and thp device requires no power to maintain the shifted wavelengths.
