Thermodynamic and kinetic studies of MgO reduction by carbon have been
carried out. Experimental results indicate that the reduction by carb
on results in a porous layer on the surface of the refractory lining,
which would allow easy penetration of the slag. In a study of the diss
olution of MgO and carbon bearing MgO refractories in both synthetic a
nd industrial slags, a two phase layer was observed on the refractory
surface, which consisted of liquid slag and a large number of MgO glob
ules. The implication of this two phase layer for the reactions betwee
n the slag and the refractory in industrial practice is discussed. IS/
