A numerical model has been developed for optimisation of the electroma
gnetic brake (EMBR) in Hoogovens' BOS No. 2. This model describes the
fluid flow in the mould under the influence of argon injection and ele
ctromagnetic forces of the EMBR. In addition the model calculates the
entrapment of argon bubbles in the solidifying shell. The behaviour of
argon bubbles in the mould has been investigated using the model and
related to the quality of the slabs. A good agreement between model ca
lculations and the observed contamination of the slabs has been found,
which proves that the numerical model is an excellent tool in optimis
