Abstract
We measured cell death in the retinas of embryonic and adult teleost f ish using TUNEL staining. Following a wave of cell birth during embryo genesis that generates all retinal cell types except rods, cell death occurs in all three nuclear layers. The lack of a corresponding patter n of cell death in the growing adult margin suggests different roles f or death during embryogenesis and adult neurogenesis. (C) 1998 Elsevie r Science B.V.
