The average g factors of the high-energy states of the three superdefo
rmed bands:in Hg-194 were determined directly in a transient field exp
eriment. The reaction Nd-150(Ca-48,4n) Hg-194 at a beam energy of 203
MeV was used to provide recoiling reaction product nuclei with suffici
ent velocity to traverse a gadolinium ferromagnetic layer. The resulti
ng g factors g(SD1)=0.36(10), g(SD2)=0.41(20), and g(SD3)=0.71(26) are
in agreement with cranked Hartree-Fock calculations as well as with t
he picture of a rigid rotation for which g = Z/A. [S0556-2813(98)50711
