The interaction mediated by irreducible pion and gluon exchange betwee
n constituent quarks is calculated and shown to have a strong tensor c
omponent, which tends to cancel the pion exchange tensor interaction b
etween quarks. Its spin-spin component is somewhat weaker than the pio
n exchange spin-spin interaction, while its central and spin-orbit com
ponents are small in comparison to the corresponding single gluon exch
ange interactions. The combination of the rr-gluon exchange interactio
n with the single pion exchange interaction and a weak gluon exchange
interaction between constituent quarks has the qualitative features re
quired for understanding the hyperfine splittings of the spectra of th
e nucleon and the Delta resonances. [S0556-2813(98)04711-6].
