We applied the in situ FTIR and AFM measurements for the analysis of i
nterfacial phenomena at graphite electrode in organic electrolytes. Th
e electrolyte solutions used were EC+DEC and EC+EMC each containing 1
mol/dm(3) LiPF6. The different reduction mechanism of solvents was obs
erved in EC+DEC and in EC+EMC. It was confirmed the morphological chan
ges of graphite particles were occurred at 1.0V vs. Li/Li+ in the firs
t cathodic polarization by the AFM observation. A larger expansion of
graphite particles was observed in EC+DEC than in EC+EMC, and this exp
ansion of graphite would be related to the decomposition of ternary so
lvated lithium graphite-intercalation compounds.
