This paper outlines my involvement with Te Runanga o Murwhenua in the
presentation of land claims before the Waitangi Tribunal. Reflecting o
n this experience, I stress the importance of keeping a running record
of one's participation in such work; examine the propriety and motiva
tion for getting involved; distinguish between different kinds of invo
lvement and explore the challenges and problems implicit in the role o
f expert witness in a Tribunal setting.
