Absorption spectra of Cs2NaLuCl6:Am3+ and Cs2NaYbCl6:Am3+ crystals are
studied over the 400-2500 nm range at 4.2-298 K. The vibronic structu
re of the f-f transitions from the ground (F-7(0)) to five excited J l
evels in the Am3+ (5f(6)) ion is analyzed. Thirteen electronic subleve
ls in Am3+ are localized, and the sublevel energies are assigned. A lo
w-temperature phase transition is revealed within the 4.2-77 K range.
