The solubility class of Chernobyl radioactive particles at inhalation
is experimentally determined for two fractions: 1-10 and 10-100 mu m.
The in vitro studies showed that the transfer of cesium, strontium, an
d plutonium radionuclides into a simulated lung fluid is well reproduc
ed by a two-exponential curve with a low (0.6-16.7%) contribution from
the readily soluble (class E) fraction. In general, with regard to th
e dissolution half-time of the poorly soluble (class D) fraction, Cher
nobyl radioactive particles are classified as inhalation-insoluble.
