Contrary to previous reports, Zeise's dimer, [Pt-2(eta(2)-C2H4)(2)(mu-
Cl)(2)Cl-2], reacts with tertiary phosphines in refluxing toluene or t
etrachloroethane to give high yields of the phosphine-substituted anal
ogues [Pt-2(PR(3))(2)(mu-Cl)(2)Cl-2][PR(3) = PMe(3), PMe(2)Ph, PEt(2)P
h, P(C6H11)(2)Ph, PMePh(2), P(C6H11) Ph(2) or PPh(3)]. A wide range of
examples has been synthesised and fully characterised by P-31-(H-1) a
nd Pt-195-{1H} spectroscopy.
