A newly prepared ligand, N,N-bis(pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)benzylamine (L) re
acted with metal ions to form [FeLCl(3)], [NiL(NCS)(2)MeOH)], [MLX(2)]
(M = Co-II, Cu-II or Zn-II, X = Cl-, Br- or NCS-) and [(CuLI)(2)]. Th
e crystallographically determined structures of [(CoLCl(2)] and [CoL(N
CS)(2)] reveal the co-ordination sphere of cobalt(II) to be intermedia
te between distorted tetrahedral and trigonal bipyramidal. In [NiL(NCS
)(2)(MeOH)] the co-ordination sphere of nickel(II) ion is distorted oc
tahedral while that of copper(II) in [CuLCl(2)] is distorted square py
ramidal. The complex [(CuLI)(2)] displays distorted tetrahedral geomet
ry around copper(I), and [ZnLBr(2)] shows distorted tetrahedral geomet
ry around zinc(II).
