Abstract
A connection between the linear thermoviscoelastic theory in continuum mechanics and the corresponding molecular theory is established. Spec ifically, it is shown that both theories lead to the same equation of change for temperature. Also they both predict a memory effect in the heat capacity. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
