A design of an X-ray echelon-monochromator based on semitransparent pl
ates of pyrolytic graphite is described. The results of comparative te
sts of 0.5- to 1-mm-thick standard pyrographite monochromators, 46- to
180-mu m-thick semitransparent plates, and an echelon-monochromator c
omprising three semitransparent plates are presented. An increase in t
he peak and integral reflectivity by 55 and 13%, respectively, is achi
eved in comparison to the best standard monochromator. The possibility
of controlling the spectrum band is shown.
