Iterative algorithms are developed for the calculation of a phase opti
cal element forming Gauss-Laguerre light beams with a prescribed mode
composition, including single-mode beams, and a phase optical element
forming Gauss-Laguerre modes in different diffraction orders. It is sh
own that phase elements whose transmission is equal to the signum func
tion of the corresponding generalized Laguerre polynomial can be used
with advantage to form separate Gauss-Laguerre modes. Results of numer
ical simulation are presented.
