We review here the George-Baker model for the yield strength anomaly o
f FeAl which is based on hardening by thermal vacancies at intermediat
e temperatures and dislocation creep at high temperatures. Results of
up-quenching and down-quenching experiments; which corroborate the vac
ancy hardening mechanism, are discussed. Some implications of the mode
l are compared with available experimental results. (C) 1998 Elsevier
